Cilento, also called Lucania Occidentale, is a geographic area of Campania, in Salerno district. This wonderful territory was nominated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is included in the National Park of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni.
The Park includes a natural area of over 180,000 hectares. This vast territory offers a unique natural view and is home to many animal species such as wolves, otters, deers, hares, wild boars, eagles, hawks, owls, and many species of bats. In the park there are also nearly 2,000 species of plants including hundreds of wild orchids and Primula Palinuro, symbol of the park.
Between the beautiful coastal towns there’s Capo Palinuro, a rocky promontory that extends to the sea and is well known as a tourist destination and is famous because its name is linked to the vicissitudes of the Aeneid. Its coasts offer untouched waters and many fascinating caves that are a destination for diving and boat trips.
In addition to the natural beauties, Cilento is rich in historical sites such as Paestum, one of the most important archaeological sites in Italy. Is an ancient town dating back to the Magna Grecia; Paestum is surrounded by 5 km long wall and 4 doors: Porta Sirena, Porta Giustizia, Porta Marina, Porta Aurea. Inside it has the Doric temples in excellent condition: the Temple of Hera or Basilica of Paestum, dating back to the 540 B.C., the Temple of Hera II or Temple of Neptune dating back to the 460 B.C. which is the main temple, the Temple of Athena dating back to the 500 BC.
