Mantova, the administrative centre, is located in Lombardy. This beautiful town has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage property for its historical and cultural heritage.
Mantua was, along with other Italian towns, the cradle of the Renaissance, and was named the capital of culture 2016. The most flourishing period for the town began in the mid 300 when Gonzaga took control and ruled it until 1700.

Many of these have been built or expanded by the Gonzaga family, such as the Palazzo Ducale, an imposing complex of several buildings, courtyards and gardens. Also Palazzo Te, built in 1525 by Frederick II Gonzaga, contains beautiful frescoes in the Sala dei Giganti and the Sala dei Cavalli. While the Court of Gonzaga Theatre, built in 1549, now houses the National Archaeological Museum in Mantova.
From Piazza Sordello, the heart of the town, besides the already mentioned Palazzo Ducale, you can admire the Tower of the Cage, the Bonacolsi Palace and the Dome of Mantova, dedicated to St. Peter. The cathedral, with a beautiful marble facade dating back to the fifteenth century and the bell tower that is even older in Romanesque style, houses many frescoes and paintings on canvas, and the tombs of several historical figures,like members of the Gonzaga family, Saint Anselmo patron of the town, and Bonifacio di Canossa.
