Assisi is a wonderful town in Umbria, in Perugia district, situated on the slopes of Mount Subasio has a lot to offer from a naturalistic point of view, is surrounded by nature and is the starting point for many outdoor excursions.
The town is well known all over the world because is the birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare, in fact it is mainly a place of pilgrimage and devotion, but is also a town rich in history, culture and art.
Among the most important buildings we can find the Major fortress that was built in the twelfth century to defend the town and the valley, is connected to the Minor fortress since the XIV century. These medieval fortresses with their towers are very well preserved, they can be reached with a walk and offer a unique spectacle.
The most visited place in Assisi is certainly the Basilica of San Francesco, which construction ended in 1230 and since 2000 was included in the list of World Heritage sites by UNESCO. The altar of the church was built over the tomb of St. Francis by Pope Gregory IX. The basilica houses wonderful frescoes, some of which were made by Giotto and Cimabue.
The Basilica of Santa Chiara is located in the old town centre. The building was finished in 1265 and already housed the remains of the saint. Later in 1850 the crypt was built to store the tomb. Next to the Basilica there’s the Clausura convent of Santa Chiara that reached its present size in 1400 and houses several works of art.
