The Agriturismo Colli Martani, located in Vocabolo Scanzano, near Massa Martana, Umbria, is an old country building established in the late 1800s and renovated over the years with additions to accommodate all the activities of a farm: vines for winemaking, olive trees and barn animals. Over the past two decades the farmhouse has been completely discontinued and with it the farming activities. The new owners’ aim, in 2016, was to renovate it to make it the headquarters of the non-profit organization “Casa Ilaria,” in order to accommodate groups of children from poor families by offering them at least six weeks of free educational vacations per year. They decided to invest not only in the development of agricultural activities but also in non-agricultural activities to fund this initiative. The renovation, with emphasis on eco-sustainability and environmental protection, preserved the atmosphere and charm of traditional dwellings in this region, while ensuring all modern comforts, such as air conditioning and free wi-fi.
