Orte is situated in Viterbo district, in Lazio.
It is a village of ancient Etruscan origin, later conquered by the Romans. For its many natural sources, this area was always a water supply center and many structures are still visible. Such as the pre-Roman aqueduct, several wells and cisterns, fountains, dovecotes and wells for snow. Today you can visit these places with ad hoc built trails.
Other places of particular interest are the Ipogea Fountain built in Roman times, it was the only point of supply of the town. The tunnels for the recovery of rainwater and springs connect various fountains and can be visited. There are also the Piazza Cisterna Fratini, the Well of Cocciopesto and Reinessance Ninfeo.
Among the buildings of Orte, there’s the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, dating back to 1721. It’s decorated in putty in the Rococo style and has polychrome marble on the altar and floor. The church houses the relics of the Saint Martyrs.
In Orte you can visit the Diocesan Museum, located in the Church of San Silvestro, includes numerous paintings and vestments and the Byzantine Madonna partial mosaic dating back to the eighth century. The Municipal Archaeological Museum, located in the church of St. Anthony, is divided in the Etruscan, Roman and early Middle Ages sections, with numerous artifacts found in the area. The Museum of the Brotherhoods of Orte, is located in the Santa Croce church and includes all the objects and vestments used by the Brotherhoods during the rites of Holy Week.
