Poggio di Luna is in the heart of the Gargano National Park, nestled amidst green, thick woodland evocatively known as the Foresta Umbra, or Forest of Shadows. But 10 minutes in the car and one soon reaches Peschici, a picturesque town with well-preserved medieval buildings perched on a cliff above the Adriatic Sea that resembles a nativity scene. Once in Peschici, just half an hour away and well worth a visit are the seaside towns of Vieste and Rodi Garganico, the so-called “citrus capital of Gargano”.
Poggio di Luna is a whitewashed two-storey building with arches, balconies and a porch running along the sides. Surrounded by the Mediterranean maquis shrubland typical of Gargano, its grounds are abundant with olive trees, maritime pines and palms, and nearer the house a kitchen garden yields a good crop of vegetables and fruit. Set high on a hill, Poggio di Luna’s elevated position guarantees truly tranquil nights and rest and relaxation during the day; a large outdoor swimming pool with jacuzzi jets beckons to its guests, especially to those who feel like a break from the beaches of Peschici or Vieste. Breakfast is a real feast of homemade savouries and sweets, fresh produce, cheeses and cold meats, and the juicy oranges of Gargano; in the restaurant tables can be booked in advance to sample the delicious local cuisine. There is no doubt that the owner, Catia, and her family have succeeded in making their visitors feel completely at home.
At Poggio di Luna there are rooms and suites of various sizes, ranging from 18 to 40 sqm. They are provided with Wi-Fi and have access to a terrace overlooking the splendid countryside, and some enjoy their own independent entrance. La Faenza cotto tiles, painted furniture and iron wrought beds have been chosen for a classic country look, and the effect is a warm, rustic elegance.
