La Ghirlanda Agriturismo is immersed in green, surrounded as it is by an estate of 220 hectares in the Saragano-Gualdo Cattaneo area that expands over the soft hills of Umbria. Todi, the lovely ancient town founded by the Etruscans in the Tiber Valley, is only 15 km away; Perugia and Spoleto, real treasures to discover, are at a distance of 25 km, while Assisi and Orvieto can be reached in an hour by car.
La Ghirlanda was once the country house of the Pongelli Benedettoni family, who originated from Todi and used it as a hunting lodge from 1920 onwards; around the same time Count Antonio Pongelli chose his land, as the soil of Saragano-Gualdo Cattaneo was already known to be very fertile. Nowadays the Pongelli Benedettoni Estate produces organic extra virgin oil and excellent quality red wines typical of the Montefalco district, grains, barley, “favino” (a leguminous plant), linen and lentils, all cultivated organically. These organic agricultural products are also fed to the livestock which is bred at the estate. La Ghirlanda opened in 1994 when Count Riccardo Pongelli Benedettoni, a descendant of Count Antonio, took over the estate, increased its production and started the holiday farm business.
There are 12 rooms at La Ghirlanda, varied in size and details but all splendidly furnished; they are situated in the manor house and in the annexe. Guests are treated to sumptuous buffet breakfasts and are invited to sample the dishes prepared according to the culinary tradition of Umbria. Countess Amalija, the chef of La Ghirlanda restaurant, also teaches cookery courses to those who have a real passion for food at her prestigious “At school with Amalija”. Visitors will enjoy the use of the pool for their relaxation, and can explore the surroundings walking the numerous routes or following them on the bike.
