Masseria Spartivento

Masseria Spartivento is situated in Salento, the southern area of the region of Puglia.  It occupies a superb position, mid way between two fine cities that can be reached in only 30 minutes: to the north Lecce, a jewel of Baroque architecture, and Otranto to the south, sitting imposingly on the Adriatic coast with its fortress.  The Nature Reserve of the Alimini Lakes is merely 5 minutes away, and those who love the sea have many splendid beaches at hand: Torre Specchia Ruggeri, San Foca, Roca, Torre dell’Orso, Sant’Andrea, Porto Badisco, Fontanelle, Serra Alimini, Frassanito and Conca Specchiulla, to name a few.

Masseria Spartivento is set deep in the verdant countryside of Otranto, at the end of paths flanked by dry-stone walls that weave through the ancient Salento olive trees.  Its two-storey building is dominated by a truncated tower whose foundations are thought to date back to the early 16th century, when the edifice was part of a fortified defence system.  The original manor house belonged to the family of the Barons Personè, who made it their country residence from where to manage their large landholdings.  After WW2 the building was the seat of the Land Reform Department until 1968, and more recently it was carefully renovated to become Masseria Spartivento, and the apple of Patrizia and Arianna’s eyes, the two owners that run it with great enthusiasm.  Patrizia prepares a delicious breakfast that can be enjoyed on the terrace, and once a week, or on demand, she cooks a traditional dinner, which is a very special occasion for her guests to taste the exquisite recipes of Puglia and get to know each other. 

Masseria Spartivento has five guest rooms that are light and spacious with original stellar vaults. They are beautifully decorated and furnished, and in keeping with the character of area: from the snow white linen and cotton bedding, which are traditionally made in Lower Salento, to the elegant pieces of country wooden furniture.  Located on the ground floor, the rooms enjoy an independent access to the olive grove that surrounds the house.
