Masseria Chicco Rizzo

Contrada Chicco Rizzo, , Rooms: 13 / Opening dates: always open from € 120 - to € 240

Masseria Chicco Rizzo is situated in the heart of the Salento, also known as Salentine Greece, an area to the south of Lecce in the Apulia region.  Visitors can travel to the Alimini Lakes, explore the surroundings and discover churches, palaces and works of art of various periods, from Greek and Roman to Byzantine times.  The famous Baroque buildings of Lecce are easy to reach, just as are the splendid Adriatic coasts, with the beaches of Torre dell’Orso and San Foca and the archaeological site of Roca Vecchia, the Strait of Otranto and the Ionian Sea.  These districts are home to the Taranta, a beguiling music to listen and dance to.

Masseria Chicco Rizzo sits astride one of the rolling hills of the Serre Salentine, at 100 m above sea level.  At the end of a path winding through the countryside and bounded by traditional dry stone walls stands this old 1700’s farmhouse that was once an inn for travellers and their horses, thanks to its strategic situation.  In fact its land was traversed by a driveway flanked by two old roads that twisted and turned along the Adriatic coast, meandering from Roca Vecchia and Otranto to Gallipoli and Lecce, passing through the little towns of the Salentine Greece and Southern Salento.

The architecture of the Masseria is imbued with a simple charm that has been safeguarded through the centuries and the changing seasons, and is in perfect harmony with its surrounding countryside typical of the Salento.  A masterful restoration has preserved almost intact the fine travertine vaults that rise above the walls made from stone from Lecce.  The original farming vocation of Masseria Chicco Rizzo has been embraced by its enthusiastic proprietor, keen to go back to his roots by revisiting his childhood memories, while intent on restoring the farm to its former productivity.  15 hundred new olive trees have been planted and they produce an excellent extra virgin oil in the best tradition of Apulia. This oil is completely organic, just as the wheat on the farm is all grown naturally.

Guests are to experience the simple good life, sample the fresh organic products of the kitchen garden and the bread baked in the 18th century oven, or try the many workshops designed to engage to more curious.  One can also browse the 500 and more books on all kinds of subjects that line the shelves of the Masseria’s library, enjoy the well-equipped outdoor pool or walk the scenic routes that depart from the farm and lead to the towns of Martignano, Sternatia, Zollino and Martano.

Masseria Chicco Rizzo has 18 rooms on the ground floor, with views over the surrounding countryside.  They are more than 20 m² in size, tastefully furnished and intended to satisfy all needs: in fact there are double, triple and quadruple rooms, and also a 50 m² suite with stone vaults and fireplace that create a comfortable country atmosphere for the most discerning travellers.
