Frances’ Lodge Relais enjoys a superb position situated on a hill that faces Siena: it resembles a huge terrace looking out over this most beautiful town, which is only 2 km away, and the surrounding countryside. Besides, this is also a very convenient spot from which the main attractions of central Tuscany are close at hand: apart from Siena, quite literally on Frances’ Lodge Relais’s doorstep, the unequalled area of the Crete Senesi is only 40 minutes away, while Firenze, Arezzo, San Gimignano and Volterra can be reached in about an hour. And for those who are fond of wine and of wine tasting, the renowned Montalcino, Montepulciano and Chianty vineyards are all within an hour’s drive.
In the 18th century the first unit of Frances’ Lodge Relais was erected just outside of Siena. In those days it was simply a farmhouse, but after Franca and Franco, the current owners who also inhabit it, had the house wisely renovated in the mid-1990s, Frances’ Lodge Relais was born. The old rooms were transformed into the guest rooms of this exclusive B&B where every detail is accounted for; the Limonaia, the conservatory where fragrant lemon trees once grew, was replaced by a breakfast room which is indeed more like a sunny hall with its 130 square metres and huge floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the spectacular countryside and onto an immaculate garden that is a joy for the senses, with its many coloured, scented blooms. Frances’ Lodge Relais has a beautiful atmosphere thanks to the peace and natural loveliness of this area of Tuscany. An outdoor pool blends perfectly with the landscape and becomes a perfect observation point from which to take in the marvellous vista of Siena; however, many are the corners, not least the pergola, that offer an impaired view of the scenery and especially of sunsets on the countryside.
There are six airy rooms at Frances’ Lodge Relais, furnished for comfort and with good taste. All their details have been painstakingly chosen as have their colours, the whites and pastel yellows and blues of the walls and furnishings, for example. Mornings start with a hearty breakfast of fresh local produce and homemade delicacies, both sweet and savoury: from organic marmalades, honey and cakes, to cheeses, cold meats and much more else besides.
