Vittoria is situated in the district of Ragusa, in Sicilia.
The town is situated on a lowland that overlooks the Canale di Sicilia and part of its territory is included in the Natural reserve Pino d’Aleppo.
In the area there were settlements already in the Bronze Age and later in Hellenic era. However, the foundation of the town is relatively recent and dates back to 1607 thanks to the Countess Vittoria Colonna Henriquez Cabrera, and the concession of the King of Spain, Philip III.
Among the points of interest there is Municipal Theatre Vittoria Vittoria Colonna, located in Piazza del Popolo. It was built in late 800 in neoclassical style with two rows of columns at the entrance and the loggia. It preserves many sculptures and busts of historical figures. The vault and ceiling are painted with figures of musicians and writers.
The Vittoria main church is the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, located in Piazza Ferdinando Ricca. It was rebuilt in 700 in Baroque style with two domes and with the interior rich in statues, paintings and decorations and with the marble floor. The Basilica houses the tomb of Vittoria Colonna Henriquez, founder of the town.
In Vittoria there’s also the Museum of civilization with typical agriculture-related tools of this area that is traditionally linked to olives, wheat and vineyards. The museum is located in the Serra San Bartolo Park, a small village of rural houses around a courtyard.
In Vittoria there’s also the Italo-Ungherese Museum created in collaboration with the Military Museum of Budapest.
